By François Sasseville, hearing care professional.
Over the years in the clinic, I’ve often heard the same thing from my patients: “I want something very discreet, Bluetooth, and rechargeable.”
For a long time, I had to be nuanced in my answer — but today, things are different!
A new generation of hearing aids finally makes it possible to combine these three features that, until recently, were impossible to achieve together.
And in practice, it changes a lot of things.

Why this advancement matters
CIC hearing aids (completely-in-canal) have always been appreciated for their discretion. Once in place, they are practically invisible.
However, this miniaturization came with certain limitations. In my practice, it often meant explaining to patients that they had to handle small batteries and that some advanced features were not available. With current technologies, that conversation is starting to change.
We can now offer, in a very discreet format:
- Bluetooth connectivity
- Easy recharging
- Significantly improved sound quality
This is an evolution I have been waiting for for a long time.
What my patients notice first
Very honestly, the first reaction I observe is not technical.
It is often a sense of relief.
Not having to handle batteries truly changes daily life, especially for active individuals and those with limited dexterity. With a battery life of up to around 20 hours, my patients can wear their hearing aids all day without worrying.
They recharge them in the evening, just like a phone. And that’s it.
What about listening performance?
This is obviously where it really matters. The goal is not just to hear, but to understand better, especially in more challenging environments.
In clinical follow-ups, the most commonly reported improvements are:
- Better understanding in restaurants
- Easier group conversations
- Less fatigue at the end of the day
This last point is often underestimated, but it makes a big difference in quality of life.
Discretion or performance? Less and less of a trade-off
For a long time, I had to help my patients make a compromise:
- Either a very discreet hearing aid
- Or more advanced technology, but more visible
Today, that line is starting to disappear.
This type of device is particularly suited for people who tell me:
“I want it to be as invisible as possible, but I also want it to work really well.”
Is it right for you?
As always in hearing care, the answer is: it depends.
Even though this technology is very promising, it is not suitable for every situation.
The type of hearing loss, the shape of the ear canal, and daily needs all play an important role in the choice.
That is why I always recommend a complete evaluation before making a decision.
In summary
What stands out most with this new generation of hearing aids is not just the technology. It is the fact that we are finally approaching the balance patients have been looking for:
discretion, ease of recharging, and performance in one single device.
And in practice, that makes a real difference.
